Das 1948 entstandene Air Standardization Coordinating Committee (ASCC, heute Air and Space Interoperability Council - ASIC) ist ein multinationales Gremium der Mitgliedsländer USA, Großbritannien, Kanada, Australien und Neuseeland. U.a. vergibt das ASCC für alle bekanntgewordenen sowjetischen / GUS- (und chinesischen) Militärflugzeuge Codenamen, die dann auch innerhalb der NATO verbindlich sind. Die Zuordnung von Haupt- und Unterversionen spiegelte in der Vergangenheit auf Grund umfassender Geheimhaltung und vielfältiger Täuschungsmaßnahmen oftmals weniger die technische Realität als vielmehr die (gewünschte) Wahrnehmung seitens des Westens wider, woraus auch im Falle der MiG-21 einige Fehler resultieren.
Entsprechend Ihrer Zweckbestimmung als Kampfflugzeug (=fighter) beginnt der Codename "Fishbed", den die MiG-21 erhielt, mit dem Buchstaben "F". Die MiG-21-Doppelsitzer wurden zum Zeitpunkt ihres Erscheinens unter "Verschiedene" (=miscellaneous) eingeordnet, weshalb ihre Bezeichnung "Mongol" mit "M" anfängt.

Among others the ASCC designates reporting names to all known Soviet / CIS (and Chinese) military aircraft which are also obligatory within NATO. Due to secrecy and disinformation the classification of main and subversions in the past often did not reflect the technical reality but the (desired) perception which led to various faults also in case of the MiG-21.
Reflecting its role a fighter aircraft the reporting name "Fishbed" given to the MiG-21 starts with letter "F". At time when MiG-21 twin-seaters appeared in public they were categorized as "miscellaneous", hence their designation "Mongol" starts with an "M".
